Owner Martin Hunting hails from a nautical family with ties to the Northumberland town of Slaley. In 1952, after completing military service with the Royal Engineers stationed in Kenya, 22-year-old Martin left home and headed for the Cape. Arriving in Stellenbosch, he educated himself in viticulture and, despite never having spoken Afrikaans, enrolled at the Elsenburg agricultural college. After graduating cum laude, he purchased a nearby farm and renamed it. Supplementing the wine attractions on the farm is a popular bistro too.
