Skilpadvlei

Stellenbosch Wine Routes

Restaurant

The 78ha farm derives its name from a colony of tortoises (skilpad in Afrikaans) that once occupied a nearby shallow dam in the 1800’s. The farm was a popular rest-stop for transport riders ferrying produce to and from the Cape. It has been in the hands of the Joubert family since 1917. The Victorian-style farmhouse was built in 1918, when the first vineyards were established too. Over the years, crops have also included wheat, vegetables and tobacco. Today, fourth generation Willie Joubert upholds the proud family tradition, having taken over from his father Jannie, in 2007. Skilpadvlei also has a restaurant, wedding venue, gift shop and farm-stay accommodation.
