Launched in 1990, Pongrácz is part of the Distell portfolio. It is a Méthode Cap Classique made in the traditional French method of allowing secondary fermentation to take place in the bottle. The range is inspired by Desiderius Pongrácz, a nobleman and refugee from the Hungarian uprising who settled in Stellenbosch in 1958 and proceeded to revolutionise viticulture in the Cape. He was amongst other, instrumental in introducing the classic Champagne varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to the winelands. Pongrácz died at the age of 61, following a tragic road accident. He was cremated and his ashes remain in the wall of the family cemetery on Meerlust Estate.
