"PaardenKloof means “valley of the horses”. It is a historic site where Khoisan Tribes settled hundreds of years ago, to herd their Nguni cattle. In the 1800’s the Voortrekkers herded their horses here.
In 2004 we established twenty-three hectares of remote mountainous vineyards on the border of the Babilonstoring Nature Reserve. We planted grape varieties specifically sourced for their suitability to our terroir. PaardenKloof Estate is home to hand crafted limited edition single vineyard varietals of premium matured Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc wines.
PaardenKloof Estate is a black-owned farm, situated in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, and forms part of both the Kogelberg and Overberg biospheres. We conserve more than 1000 hectares of our 1430 hectares for its pristine mountainous fynbos, including rare Red Data species and critically endangered Renosterveld. We follow Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) guidelines in terms of farming the land and we belong to the Biodiversity in Wine (BWI) initiative that champions the preservation of biodiversity on wine farms. We have also been approached by the WWF to participate in their Voluntary Stewardship programme. PaardenKloof is also a member of Wieta, an organisation that promotes and ensures the ethical treatment of farm workers by adhering to the Wieta Code of conduct.
Respect for time and the natural environment, our cool sea breezes and the soil structure, our careful vineyard management, our harvesting and labour practices and our passion have all ensured that PaardenKloof Estate wines give true expression to their unique location, terroir and character.
Besides our limited release wines, which represent our estate’s pivotal passion, we have a Stud Herd of indigenous Nguni cattle, organically reared sheep and rare fynbos. These wonderful gifts that have been entrusted in our care for future generations are all on offer at the edge of a wilderness area where leopard, lynx and buck still roam free.
Wine Releases
PaardenKloof Estate has walked a long road, with its first vineyards planted in 2004 and nurtured over the years by a dedicated team who are totally in awe of the landscape and terroir of this beautiful farm. The farm is 100% black-owned and managed.
PaardenKloof achieves exceptional wines, with its held-back vintages scheduled for release after a period of maturation. The reds are released after a five-year maturation period and the whites after 18 months in the bottle. Our varietals include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. All our wines are registered with SAWIS as Single vineyard wines.
In November 2016, we also released our Ecology range of wines which feature the younger vintages of the Sauv Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauv varietals."
