La Couronne literally translates into The Crown, stemming from the famous French warship that brought the French Huguenot settlers to the Cape of Good Hope in 1688. Three centuries later, under Francois Smith who took ownership in 2011, La Couronne still pays homage to the Huguenots through wine. Its vineyards span 23ha and comprise nine grape varieties – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot, Malbec, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Outdoor activities including mountain biking, hiking and picnics are among its big attractions along with the pizza restaurant.
