Kanonkop Wine Estate is a premium red wine producer in the Simonsberg Region. It is a fourth-generation family enterprise originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. The estate was handed down from father to son for over 40 years and is now in the hands of Paul and Johann Krige. The name Kanonkop was derived from a hillock, from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers that trading ships had entered Table Bay for a stopover. The farm comprises 125ha, of which 100ha are planted to vine. Production is focused on Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon.
