Breedekloof Wine Valley

The lesser-explored Breedekloof, a valley of slow-ripening vines, is home to farming families with a long tradition, some reaching back over three centuries. This wine hamlet, situated just over an hour's drive from Cape Town, offers expansive and dramatic mountain views, as well as a range of activities that cater to all tastes, whether it's a thirst for the outdoors, or for something a bit more literal in the form of wine, craft gin or craft beer.

Experience

How much fun can you have on a wine route? Well, besides the expected offering of quality wines and hearty country food, we also throw in majestic mountains, vineyards and sparkling rivers, offering healthy outdoor fun for mountain bikers, hikers, birders and fly-fishermen.

Not to mention our hot springs, stunning fynbos and warm, hospitable people who are passionate about winemaking and the Breedekloof Valley. We are just an hour from Cape Town, along the N1, but with all we have to offer it’s not surprising that many visitors turn their day trips into overnight stays.

Accommodation ranges from picturesque camping and caravan sites, to self-catering chalets, B&Bs and luxurious guesthouses. Most are situated among vineyards, on the banks of the Breede River or surrounded by fynbos in the mountains.

Wineries

The Breedekloof Wine Valley is one of South Africa’s most picturesque, and dramatically beautiful, wine regions. The diverse terroir – from mountain slopes, to the banks of the Breede River – allow for many different types of cultivars to be planted, resulting in a wide range of award-winning wines produced by our 18 wineries.

Breedekloof Wine Route comprises 22 wineries in the Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini and Breede River areas, ranging from small boutique cellars to estates.

Superb bistros and restaurants in the Breedekloof Valley offer a variety of dishes for the visitor to area, mostly on the wine farms themselves. Try the Bergsig Bistro, the Bistro at Jasons, the impressive new Bosjes development, the Opstal Restaurant or Slanghoek Mountain Resort Restaurant & Deli.

Wellness

Visit the Goudini Spa hot water holiday resort, and let the warm mineral baths soothe and relax you.

Trudie Webb

No matter how you look at it, wine farming just isn’t the same as any other kind of farming. You won’t find a cattle farmer hosting a special release of his 2020 vintage beef or a vertical tasting from a wheat farmer. And though some of the glamour and glory of winemaking might seem unfair to other farmers, it all makes a bit more sense during harvest time in the winelands.

Vineyards are lush and full of fruit and visitors get to be part of the harvest fun. Get a sense of the grape’s journey from vine to barrel with these eight harvest festivals.
