Bot River Wine Route

1. Favourite Things Market

Shop for stylish, handmade and homemade festive season gifts at this intimate market featuring 45 hand-selected traders. We recommend that you enjoy a meal at their well-loved farm-to-table restaurant, but remember to reserve a table in advance.

Constantia Wine Route

2. Constantia Gift Fair

For a curated shopping experience offering a variety of unique gifts, make space in your calendar (and budget) for the Constantia Gift Fair. From trendy scatter cushions to bespoke jewellery and handmade kiddies clothing – there’s something for everyone. They also have a deli section where you can sample, savour and shop artisanal food products.

3. Groot Constantia Festive Concert

Relax with classical music under the stars at The Symphony Choir of Cape Town’s annual festive concert. Bring your own chairs and blankets and order a delicious picnic basket  from Simon’s Restaurant.

4.  Uncle Paul’s Christmas Party

A special affair, aimed to entertain the little ones. See your kid’s eyes light up with wonder as they see the fairy-tale castle, sing carols, play fun games and get to meet Noddy and his friends. Of course, Father Christmas will come by to surprise them and hand them each a gift. Uncle Paul’s legendary Christmas Parties began in 1956 and is still organised by, and in aid of the Wynberg Rotaract Club.

When: 22 November – 20 December 2019, 18:00.

Namaqua West Coast Wine Route

5. Strandfontein Kersmark

Stop by the popular Christmas market in this quaint coastal town to view more than 80 exhibitors’ goods and enjoy a light lunch in the informal coffee shop. You’ll meet warm-hearted locals and get gifts at bargain prices. Due to popular demand, this market will now be hosted over three additional days.

When: 13 – 20 December 2019, 09:00 – different closing times depending on the day.

6. Twilight Christmas Market

When it’s Christmas time, this popular family Sunday market opens its doors for almost a week of sunset and evening festivities. Grab something delicious to eat at a food stall, shop for gifts and let the kids have the time of their lives in the entertainment area.

7. Spier Light Art Festival

Spier’s dream-like exhibition of light art-displays is back for the second year. 

Don’t miss this unique exhibition of artworks, all incorporating light and sound in a creative way. Enjoy wine or dinner on the estate and stay until it’s dark to walk the farm and enjoy the interesting art.

8. Carols by Candlelight – Somerset West

The expansive lawns on this scenic wine farm is the perfect setting to have a delicious picnic, listen to a joyful Christmas message and sing along to festive songs with family and friends.

9.  Tygerberg Children’s Choir Christmas Concert

Be carried away by the angelic voices of the Tygerberg Children’s Choir. The talented group is currently ranked as the 4th best choir in the world on the Interkultur rankings, so you are in for a real treat. They will be singing a special repertoire of familiar and festive songs.

10. Christmas Brilliance and Garden of Lights

A truly special (and very popular) Christmas outing for the whole family. Have the kids in awe at the interactive light experience featuring ten different segments, including a photo opportunity with Santa on his sleigh. Come a bit earlier for a picnic in the beautiful gardens, and gift shopping at the market – all whilst cheerful Christmas music plays in the background.

Tulbagh Wine Route

11. Tulbagh Witzenville Faire

December doesn’t only signal the start of the festive season but also the fruit season, and this area is known to deliver some of the top fruit produce in the country. Celebrate with the locals and support their food stalls, talent, arts and crafts. There’s a jumping castle for the kids too.

12. Krismis met die Sterre

A stellar line-up of local music groups and talent will be performing under the Paarl night sky, all to celebrate the merriness of the Christmas season. Enjoy a night with, and under, the stars, by enjoying the performances of local bands, artists, musicians and appearances by celebrities.

13. Full Moon Picnic with Father Christmas

For brownie points with your kids, take them to meet Santa Clause in real life. Wrap and mark their gifts, pack your picnic baskets (or order one from the Taalmonument café) and enjoy a special time together. You can also arrive a bit earlier for a guided tour of this iconic monument.

14. Plaas Christmas Market at Oude Wellington

This down-to-earth farm-style market is a weekly institution in Wellington right through the year. Be sure to visit the Christmas version, guaranteed to put you in the festive spirit. There will be music, competitions, entertainment for the kids and a couple of stands selling local produce and hand-made goods.

Durbanville Wine Route

15. Durbanville Kruiskerk Geskenkemark

Expect a classic indoor flea-market vibe at the Kruiskerk church’s annual community gift market. The kids will have a jolly time at the play area whilst dad enjoys breakfast or lunch with a coffee and mom shops for homemade preserves, décor, clothing and unique toys.

16. The Gift Market @ Curro

A fun outing for the whole family with more than 120 exhibitors coming from all over South Africa to offer a convenient gift-shopping experience under one roof. Added bonus: they have artisanal eats and great coffee.

17. Carols by Candlelight at Benguala Cove

Support a great cause by singing along to joyful carols performed by the Handevat Music Project’s orchestra. You couldn’t get a more breath-taking setting to put you in the mood for Christmas, surrounded by the lagoon and ocean with mountains at the back.

18. Christmas with Richard Cock in Hermanus

Listen and appreciate the majestic sounds of orchestra music, led by one of the country’s most renowned conductors, Richard Cock. The Christmas Extravaganza is presented in aid of Izibusiso Home for abandoned children in Zwelihle.

Franschhoek Wine Valley

19.  Franschhoek Village Christmas Market

The Franschhoek Village Market is a popular attraction right through the year, with more than 100 traders selling an eclectic selection of produce, crafts and handmade goods under the big oak trees. For three days in December the market sparkles in festive flair with live entertainment, kids activities and Christmas gifts.

When: 21 – 23 December, 09:00 – 15:00.

20.  Black Oystercatcher Summer, Wine and Craft Beer Festival

Relax to the rhythms of some of South Africa’s best artists like Arno Carstens, Bottomless Coffee Band and the Blues Broers to settle into summer. Dig into their famous fresh food, craft beer and cool-climate wines whilst you’re there. You will also be the first to taste their brand new Sauvignon Blanc.
